Calculation Method

The calculator uses horizontal pixel density. The required horizontal field of view at the target is calculated by dividing the camera’s horizontal resolution by the required pixels per metre.

The required focal length is then calculated from the selected sensor width, target distance and horizontal field of view. A sensor format is recommended from common CCTV imaging formats by identifying a practical sensor and lens combination.
